The mobile market has witnessed rapid technological advancements in the past couple of years. With the advent of each year, mobile phones are donning new mantles. The latest talk of the town is a 3G mobile phone. Though this technology is limited to few countries, the phenomenon is catching up the fever to be adapted and integrated globally.

3G, short form of third generation mobile telephone technology, is based on GSM standard. Unlike its predecessors, it uses a different frequency band to deliver data, in an much improved and faster rate. In a 3G mobile phone, the contents can be send through calls, messaging and internet based content. Which means, the users have superior voice quality, enhanced roaming capabilities and broadband data transmission rates of 2mbps (megabits per second).

Video calling is often termed as the “ killer application” of a 3G mobile phone. But this amounts to a small part, as music downloads have taken the precedence. Application in a 3G mobile phones includes video phone calls, video message bank, internet and email, interactive gaming, and media streaming like news, weather and dedicated TV shows.

The market of 3G mobile phones is booming in such a way, that almost all manufacturers ( Motorola, LG, Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson) have launched handsets that can support it. These mobile phones come with sufficient memory and storage, necessary to maximize the amount of data and multimedia content that can be stored.

Why some countries do not have a 3G network, is because the technology is expensive. Then, there is a licensing problem. In UK, 3G mobile phones are still quite limited in rural areas. Japan and Korea are the only countries in the world, that can boast the advantage of of 3G mobile phones, in every nook and corner of its map.

Possessing a 3G mobile phone is sure a status symbol now. For it not only empowers you to a whole new world of possibilities, but also show off that you are a privileged class.
